Video: Fulbright Presentation

As I had promised, here is the video version of my presentation. For those of you who have not yet read the previous post, I traveled to Santander to present my research at the Fulbright midyear meeting.  It just barely covers all of the exciting work I’ve been involved with in the past year, but we were only given five-minutes to present.  I really enjoyed making this video, and for those of you interested,...

Las Fallas or Santander?

It’s truly an unfortunate predicament.  As a foreigner living in Valencia for the first time, missing Las Fallas is all but blasphemous.  It is arguably the most important week in Valencia.  However, thanks to some untimely planning, La Comisión Fulbright decided that this would be the week to have our obligatory mid-year meeting. Of course, only in Spain would a “mid” year meeting be held when the...

Yasmin Katha Barcelona

Yea, I know.  I’m running out of witty titles for my blog entries, but this was just too hard to resist.  For those of you who don’t recognize it, I’m referring to Woody Allen’s film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona.  I watched it before coming to Spain along with a couple of Almodóvar’s films as part of my so-called preparation for Spain.   I was sadly disappointed when my visit...

Thanksgiving in Spain

As is the case with all past Thanksgivings, I always end up at someone else’s Thanksgiving dinner.  Why?  Well, for one, my parents have never cooked turkey.  Ever.  In fact, my mother hates it.  My grandparents sometimes get around to it, but my fragile little grandmother just can’t do a turkey like it ought to be done.  Besides, turkey done by Persians is simply not recommended.  And second,...

Fiesta del Pilar en Zaragoza

Katha and I decided to spend our first Puente (holiday weekend) in Zaragoza, for the Fiesta del Pilar. Everyone else was planning to come to Valencia, for the Dia de la Comunidad (9 d’Octubre), but the most important events where the fireworks Thursday night and the Mascletà and parade the next day. What are Mascletás?  Basically, a type of street firework during the daytime producing lots and lots of...

Why am I in Spain?

“…and to understanding the neural garden of Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s timeless metaphor ‘las células de formas delicadas y elegantes, las misteriosas mariposas del alma’ — cells of delicate and elegant shapes, the mysterious butterflies of the soul.” The above is from my Fulbright project proposal essay, and likewise, my favorite. Ramón y Cajal (note: that’s one person, not two) is...

Fresh (Fulbright) Meat

This week I hopped on the bus and headed to Madrid for the official Fulbright orientation. Of course by now I had already gone through the hurdles of adjusting to life in Spain; I had my bank account set up, received my stipend check, and found a place to live. For me, it was more an opportunity to get to know my fellow Fulbrighters. So what did I learn from the orientation? That the Fulbright commission...
